Garmin GI 275: what changes when you replace mechanical instruments
The GI 275 is a Garmin electronic flight instrument in the 3 1/8 inch format, designed to take the place of mechanical instruments on the panel. Because it matches the size of traditional instruments, the swap reuses the existing cutout, which usually simplifies installation.
The question that decides everything, however, is not what the unit does: it is whether your aircraft can receive it. That is defined by the installation approval applicable to your model, and it is the first thing Flap checks.
How to evaluate a GI 275 swap
- 1
Which instrument you want to replace
Attitude indicator, vertical speed indicator, standby instrument or engine indication. Each function has its own configuration and its own approval, and the list of approved aircraft differs from one to the next.
- 2
Approval applicable to your model
Installing equipment of this type is done under an STC with an approved model list (AML). These lists are expanded over time: for example, an expansion published in 2023 added more than 1,500 aircraft, including business jet models, to the GI 275 STC as an electronic standby instrument. The check must be made against the current document, never from memory.
- 3
Approval path in Brazil
An FAA STC is not automatically valid in Brazil: ANAC validates the STC and issues a Brazilian Supplemental Type Certificate. The guide on STC validation explains the process. Flap works out the path that applies to your aircraft before quoting, so the quote does not depend on an approval that does not yet exist.
- 4
Integration with the rest of the panel
The GI 275 can receive GPS, magnetic heading and VHF navigation data from several compatible sources. What is installed in your aircraft today defines what can be reused and what needs to be adapted.
- 5
Installation by someone who knows the panel
Swapping an instrument involves the electrical installation, the pitot-static system and the aircraft's documentation. It must be done by a qualified maintenance organization, with an entry in the logbook.
Flap supplies Garmin avionics and oversees their installation. Send the model, year and current panel of your aircraft by WhatsApp, and the first answer is whether the swap is possible and by which path, before any quote.

Frequently asked questions
Does the GI 275 fit my aircraft?
It depends on the installation approval applicable to your model. Send the model, year and what is on the panel; the check is the first step.
Is the GI 275 the same size as the old instruments?
It is a 3 1/8 inch instrument. In some cases an adapter plate is used to fit cutouts of a different standard, and this is defined at installation.
Do I need to replace the whole panel to use the GI 275?
No. It was designed to replace instruments individually, and it can integrate with compatible equipment already installed. What needs to be replaced depends on the current panel.
